CALIBER SERVICES: FIRE PITS & FIRE FEATURES
WOOD, GAS, OR PROPANE?
ASK YOURSELF:
WHAT DO I WANT TO CREATE? Do you want a highlight for backyard ambience? Or are you looking for a place right in your backyard for family hot dogs and delicious, hot s'mores? Or would a toasty centerpiece for cool evenings fit your style?
How much use will your fire feature get? Who will use it? How much effort do you want to put in when you build it? How about when you use it? In the St George area, we've used a variety of wood burning and natural gas style fire features as part of landscape installations. When it comes down to it...it really depends on what kind of atmosphere you want to create! |
WHY YOU MIGHT CHOOSE WOOD BURNING
It's real! You get real wood smell, campfire crackling sound, glowing embers, REAL marshmallow roasting pockets...there's nothing quite like a real fire, if that's what you're going for!
If you have a wood supply, you can use it when the gas is off or the power is off...it's readily available. Installation doesn't require trenches through the yard to put in gas lines--so less mess on the install, and much less expensive to install than a similar looking natural gas counterpart. A note: you should always check that your city/HOA allows wood burning firepits (some don't). |
WHY YOU MIGHT CHOOSE NATURAL GAS
It's convenient because it can usually be connected to the home's natural gas system.
You can turn it on and off and adjust the flame intensity with a switch like a fireplace--it's easy! Almost no mess (after installation)--no wood pieces, ash or smoke. Natural gas fire features can be built in custom sizes and shapes; small large, round, rectangle, etc. AND you can add colorful glass or other extra-personalized embellishments to compliment your site. Because they are so customizable, natural gas fire features look beautiful, lit or not! |
WHY YOU MIGHT CHOOSE PROPANE
Propane isn't usually a first choice for fire features, because wood and natural gas options offer benefits that propane does not.
However, if you don't have access to natural gas lines and you don't want to fuel your fire feature with wood, propane can fill in the gap. One potential benefit of propane is that it can be portable--for example, a small moveable table with a small attached propane bottle. |
Firepits are one of the things we have enjoyed most in our personal backyard (we chose a wood burning firepit). We've made such great memories with our kids, hosted extended family and neighborhood marshmallow roasts and dutch oven dinners, and just generally enjoyed great company gathered around the firepit.
Whatever type of fire feature you choose, it's a certainty that memories will be made and fun will be had!
Happy memory-making!
